Upgrading from SnapOS Version 2.x to 4.0
Use this document to upgrade a Snap Server from SnapOS v2.x to v4.0. The administration utility you use to perform the SnapOS upgrade depends on the SnapOS version currently running on your Snap Server.
Administration Tool — If your Snap Server is currently running SnapOS version 3.4.x, you can use either Assist or the browser-based Administration Tool to perform the SnapOS upgrade. (Previous versions of the Administration Tool did not include an upgrade feature.)
Assist — If your Snap Server is currently running a version of the SnapOS prior to 3.4.x, you must use the Assist administrative utility to perform the SnapOS upgrade. The utility is available from your User CD or from http://www.snapappliance.com/download. Information on using Assist can be found in your administrator guide.
Tip You can also upgrade to SnapOS 4.0 using command-line utilities.
Upgrade Notes
Before you start the upgrade process, back up the data on the Snap Server. The upgrade process should not affect the data on your Snap Server. However, Snap Appliance recommends that you back up your data before implementing any system-wide changes as a precautionary measure.
Disconnect all active users before performing an upgrade procedure. If the server is still in use during the upgrade, the process may not complete successfully, and the system may report a failure to perform a disk consistency check. (This event is much more likely to occur if you have Mac clients accessing the server.) Snap Appliance recommends you notify your users to log off before the scheduled down time to prevent any data loss and to ensure the success of the upgrade.
Do NOT interrupt an upgrade process or power off the server during an upgrade process. Interrupting or aborting an upgrade process may damage the server and cause data loss.
The upgrade process may take as long as an hour. When upgrading from SnapOS v2.x to v4.0, the newly installed software will upgrade the file system (to support file-level ACLs) when the server restarts. The file system upgrade may take as long as an hour depending on the amount of data on the file system and the size of the disk(s). You will not be able to access data on the disk until the upgrade is complete. When the process is complete, the disk LED will stop blinking.
Upgrading with the Administration Tool (v3.4.x and above only)
1 Download the upgrade file (snap_sys.sup) from http://www.snapappliance.com/download and save it to a local system.
2 Connect to the Snap Server via the browser-based Administration Tool, logging in as the administrator.
3 Navigate to the Server Settings > OS Update screen.
4 Use the Browse button to navigate to and select the upgrade file.
5 Click OK to begin the update process.
The screen displays a status indicator showing the progress of the update. The Snap Server may take up to approximately 30 minutes to restart in order to validate the upgrade file.
Upgrading with Assist
Tip Make sure you are using a 4.x version of Assist (previously called SnapAssist). Older versions of this utility will not work with the 4.x update file. To determine the Assist version number, run Assist, click the icon in the upper left corner of the screen, and then click About Assist.
1 If necessary, download the latest version of Assist (Assist.zip) from http://www.snapappliance.com/download. Unzip the file to a computer running Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000, Me, or XP that can access the Snap Server via TCP/IP.
2 Download the SnapOS 4.x upgrade file (snap_sys.sup) from http://www.snapappliance.com/download and save it to a local system, not on the Snap Server.
3 To start Assist, double-click Assist.exe.
Assist displays a list of Snap Servers on your network. The Snap Server that you are updating must appear in green (indicating that it has been configured).

4 Select the server in the Servers list.
5 Click Advanced and log in using an administrator account, such as ADMINISTRATOR, ROOT, or SUPERVISOR.
6 Click Upgrade to display the Upgrade dialog box.
7 Use the Browse button to navigate to and select the upgrade file.
8 Click Apply to begin the update process.
Assist displays a status bar that indicates the progress of the update.
Upgrading with command-line utilities
The OSUpdate utility (and the UGUpdate utility) can be installed by downloading Util_Zip.exe from http://www.snapappliance.com/download. Unzip the file to a computer running Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT 4.0, or XP that has network access to the Snap Server.
OSUpdate — Use the OSUpdate program to (1) update the SnapOS from a command line; or, (2) write a script or batch file to update multiple Snap Servers.
