Snap Server Upgrade Guide
Use this document to determine which SnapOS upgrade procedure to use for your Snap Server. The correct procedure depends on the SnapOS version currently running on your Snap Server.
Tip If you are running a version of the SnapOS prior to v3.4, Snap Appliance recommends you upgrade the Virtual Machine as well.
What version of the SnapOS is running on my Snap Server?
To identify the SnapOS software version, click the logo in the upper left corner of any screen in the browser-based Administration Tool. A window opens, displaying version information as shown the following table:
Model
Software
Hardware
Server Number
BIOS
2000 series 2.3.417 (US) 1.1.0 130070 1.2.180
How do I upgrade the SnapOS?
To upgrade the SnapOS, you download the upgrade file (snap_sys.sup) from the Snap Appliance Web site and use one of the Snap Server administration utilities (Assist, the browser-based Administration Tool, or the command-line utilities) to perform the upgrade.
Upgrading from v2.0 or higher — If your Snap Server is running SnapOS version 2.0 or higher, see the upgrading to v4.0 instructions.

Upgrading from earlier versions — If your Snap Server is running SnapOS v 1.x, you must perform two upgrade procedures: (1) Upgrade to v2.0 using the upgrading from v1.x to v2.0 instructions; and, (2) Once the 2.0 upgrade has been performed successfully, upgrade your Snap Server again using the upgrading to v4.0 instructions.

Caution Do not downgrade a Snap Server from v4.0 to v2.x
There is a change in the disk format between Snap Server v4.0 and v2.x. The disk format change is handled automatically, so it is safe to upgrade to v4.0. However, once the disk format is upgraded to v4.0, you cannot revert to any earlier version of the SnapOS. The older software will not recognize the new disk format. As a result it may reconfigure your drives and cause data loss.
Upgrading the Virtual Machine
The Virtual Machine allows you to use SSL, SnapExtensions such as Server-to-Server Synchronization and other applications based on Java™ technology. If your Snap Server shipped with SnapOS 3.4.x or higher preinstalled, you already have the latest version of the Virtual Machine. If your Snap Server shipped with SnapOS version 3.1.x, or if you have upgraded to SnapOS v3.4.x or higher, you need to upgrade the Virtual Machine as well.
